Strickland’s History With Hammermill Paper Co.

Although Strickland Companies sources printing paper from a wide variety of locations, we are proud to source some of our printing papers right here is Alabama. Today we want to share our history of our relationship with Hammermill papers, now owned by International Paper, who is one of our largest suppliers.

We became a merchant for Hammermill in 1929, and remain the second oldest Hammermill merchant in the U.S. Hammermill Paper Company was an American paper manufacturer that was initially founded in 1899 as the Ernst R. Behrend Company. That same year, its first paper mill was construced in Erie, Pennsylvania. The company was founded by three brothers and their father Moritz Behrend. Throughout the years, Hammermill continuously leveraged the power of innocation to develop cutting-edge products that had never been seen before on the market. In 1950, Hammermill created the first ever xerographic copier papers (copy paper) as Haloid-Xerox Company’s partners. This introduced a new concept for merchandising: cut-size paper.

One of International Paper Company’s mills in Selma, Alabama is included in Strickland’s network. The paper making process at this mill is environmentally responsible from start to finish. Environmental responsibility is central to Strickland’s core values: relational, agile, evolutionary, stable and focused. Our suppliers are constantly working to progress beyond the current state of paper making and innovate new ways to make the process even more eco-friendly. Strickland’s prioritization of environmentally conscious production methods means that our customer always receive quality, locally sourced printing papers with rich histories.
